main focus of institution and department
The forests in Bulgaria cover 4.04 mill. ha or 34% of the country. At present the management of the state forests and the control over all the rest forests is responsibility of the Executive Forest Agency with the following activities:
- regeneration of forests, afforestation, anti-erosion activities, thinning;
- protection of biodiversity;
- protection of forests from pests and diseases;
- silvicultural activities;
- utilization of timber and non-timber forest resources;
- extension services, etc.
Executive Forest Agency is responsible for the implementation of the EU legal framework on the sustainable, multifunctional and close to nature forest management and the relevant Resolutions of the Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forest in Europe / Warsaw resolution 2 - Forests and Water/. This responsibility is covered by implementing the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Forest Sector in Bulgaria, 2006 – 2015.

short description of PP activities
The role of State Forestry Agency in the project is related to forests, playing a critical role in influencing the Earth's climate and in sustaining and protecting water supplies. They also contribute to soil erosion control and consequently reducing the levels of sediments downstream.  Forests also tend to delay water runoff, metering out the flow more gently over time than other land cover types.
Analysis and modeling of the relationships between forests and water supply and forests impacts on water resources are of great importance for evaluation of climate change impact on future water quantity and quality and for prognosis of the potential consequences of climate change on forest and water interactions. Executive Forest Agency is a Project Partner 11 within the project and is part of the implementation of the WP3, WP4 and WP5.

description of test area
Struma river watershed

what does the partner bring into the project?
Analysis and modeling of the relationships between forests and water supply and forests impacts on water resources

benefits for the partner by participation in the project
Modeling the relationships between forests and water in the test bed and climate change influence on both, applicable for other watersheds in the region. Prognosis for the climate change impact on forest ecosystems, resp. water ecosystems and methodology for integrated management of both ecosystems
